The Butcher and the Vegan is a Hamilton restaurant on Barton St at the corner of John St. The restaurant offers up a seasonally inspired menu featuring producers and suppliers within a 100 km radius of Hamilton. B+V offers a menu that is friendly for vegans and meat lovers alike (a number of the dishes are also gluten free). It is somewhere where everyone has a great selection of beautiful and mouthwatering dishes to choose from.
This restaurant also puts on a number of fun events like trivia night on Tuesdays. Recently, B+V put on a special tasting menu which was inspired by the fruits of Niagara. This special event also featured Good Earth Winery who provided pairings for each course of the meal.
The night started with an heirloom tomato and Niagara peach gazpacho with fennel fronds and basil infused olive oil (above).
Next up was the most delicious grilled peach salad that was topped with spiced sunflower seeds.
There was a diverse selection of wine from Good Earth Winery and I highly recommend their Syrah if you can get your hands on a bottle!
The menu then split off and you had to choose either the butcher or the vegan option. I went with the vegan option and got the fried polenta with wild mushroom ragout and balsamic drizzle.
I then continued with the butcher option of juniper scented duck breast with Niagara cherry and port wine reduction.
The grand finale featured the most amazing Niagara peach and cherry crisp with goats cream cheese.
This fantastic night is definitely something I look forward to doing again. It was a great deal as well for $40 per person!
